Team U.S.A's Helen Maroulis became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in women's wrestling on Thursday, beating Japan's Soari Yoshida in the 53-kilogram freestyle 3 to 1.
The win was extremely epic given that the both wrestlers have gone undefeated in major tournaments for the past couple of years, and Yoshida was attempting to win her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event. But the 24-year's old Maroulis was simply unstoppable, and ended up taking home the gold in an emotional medal ceremony that left both athletes in tears.
Here are just a few things you should know about this incredibly talented athlete.
1. She was the 2015 World Wrestling Championship during which she won her final match against Russia's Irina Olodogonova with a score of 11 to 0.
2. She's also a three-time world medalist and six- time national champion. Basically, she's really good at wrestling.
3. She missed the 2012 Olympic wrestling team by one point were she was beaten by Kelsey Campbell, in the final match of a best-of-three series.
4. She usually fights in the 53-kilogram weight class, but had to cut weight because the Olympics doesn't have a competition in that range.
5. She's been on Team U.S.A since 2008. When she was 16, she came eight in world championship and third in junior world championship.
6. If wrestling doesn't work out for her, she'd make an amazing gymnast. (with some training, obviously)
